VPN and Android app?
Hello:
I'm new here, so please excuse me if this is a repeat post. I've looked around and don't think so. I installed my 12 zone RainMachine yesterday, and everything works as it should and all my zones work. Go figure.
The RainMachine app on my Android phone works fine when I am connected to my home network over WiFi. When I'm away from home I want to use the same app to access the system, so I set up a VPN on a Cisco Firewall. WiFi data is disconnected then. The RainMachine App will not connect to the RainMachine, so I'm guessing I've missed something. I can log into the RainMachine unit with the web browser, so I know I have connectivity. I have remote access enabled, but frankly as far as the Rain Machine app goes, it could just as well be WiFi. Any help would be appreciated.
The second issue on the Android app is I can't associate a picture with a zone. I understand you need to use the app to do that. So when I select a picture of a zone, I crop it, and as soon as I save it the screen goes back to show the name of my device and the IP address. There seems to be no option to save it in the "app" since it resorts back to the app start up screen.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Wayne,
Congratulations on getting your controller up and running.
First we'd like to know your phone model and android version so we can investigate why it crashes when saving zone pictures.
As for the VPN, after you create the VPN connection are you able to access the RainMachine local web interface (not through https://my.rainmachine.com) ? Because I understand tha mobile app doesn't work and web interface works over VPN, but might not be correct.

Hi: I'm running a Motoroloa Droid Maxx2 using Android Version 7.1.1. Stop laughing... it has a massive battery!
Regarding the VPN. The web UI works fine when I use a browser and go to the IP address of the rain machine. To do that, I am miles from home, I set up a VPN on the droid, open Chrome, and go to my IP. The Android app won't let me connect unless I'm using local WiFi on the inside of the firewall.
Thanks.

Hi Wayne,
Would you be OK to share with us some temporary VPN credentials so we can test your scenario and find a fix? Besides the credentials, we also need the email you use for remote access and a temporary generated PIN from inside the app (in order to remotely log onto your RainMachine). To generate the PIN, go to System Settings and click on Generate Guest/Support PIN.
You can send this private info to catalin@rainmachine.com

Catalin:
Thank you so much for your fast help!! Now I can associate pictures with Zones on my Motorola Android using the beta version I just installed.
And I realized that to connect to my VPN, you need to go to network settings and enter the LAN IP address of the Rain Machine under "Direct Access". Now if it ever stops raining I'll water the lawn....
Thank you again.
Wayne
