I am very interested in this product but I have concerns about data gathering by this company. Do I have to connect to the rain machine site to do things like programming the unit etc? Does the phone just talk to it directly without going through Rainmachine's servers?
Thanks!

Hi, Mike
Thank you for your question.
We understand and value users privacy that's why our RainMachine devices are cloud independent "by design" they do not rely on a cloud connection in order to work. Internet connection is needed only for weather forecast data to be downloaded regularly directly from free weather services like NOAA, Metno, WUnderground or your personal weather stations.
If the internet connection is down, the device will operate as programmed, no delays or settings or program loss.To use the RainMachine device independently:
1) connect the RainMachine device to your Wi-Fi network, make sure that there is internet connection available and it is stable on your Wi-Fi network (this is only needed for the weather forecast data to be downloaded and used by the RainMachine watering smart algorithm),
2) download and install our RainMachine mobile application iOS or Android - YES, the phone "talk" with the RainMachine directly even without the internet connection being available through your local Wi-Fi network, because being on the same Wi-Fi network with the RainMachine device, the phone will automatically find the RainMachine and you'll be able to control it from your mobile device,
4) if you prefer the bigger screen size then simply type the RainMachine Local IP into your desktop browser (we recommend latest version of Google Chrome) and connect to the RainMachine web application - and YES, the web application is located on the RainMachine device and does not connect to any outside servers in order to operate, all data listed are from the device itself. Also, very important, the RainMachine Touch HD-12/16 devices can be fully controlled and programmed from the intuitive and simple to use local touch screen interface.
Hope this will answer your questions and concerns, Mike.
Thank you for your interest.
