What is the little USB-like dongle on the top right of the unit for?  Should this be kept in at all times?

  Hi, Michael.
  The USB dongle is the Wi-Fi adaptor for the RainMachine Touch HD devices and yes, it has to be there all time, otherwise there will be no internet connection available for the unit.

  If I may add: IN case of poor WIFI signal, the USB radio can be 'extended' with a few feet USB extension cord so that it can reach better signal (such as closer to the window).
