Looking to purchase a controller of some description however my water is from a well 250m away, I could leave the power on to the pump and have the system  pressurized all the time.

My other option is to use a wifi plug-in smart switch for the pump could this be activated every time irrigation starts using one of the RainMachine models?

I do have a wifi AP near the pump and where the controller will be.

  RainMachine has a "Master Valve" option. What this does is to send 24V to your pump before irrigation starts and can be programmed to start well before the actual irrigation so you can build pressure. This will require to connect 2 wires from RainMachine to your pump.

  To do it  wireless you could use IFTTT integration to turn  the Pump WiFi Plug when watering starts on RainMachine (this might have a delay between RainMachine starting and your pump starting).

  I have set up a smart relay to turn on the irrigation pump and created 2 applets to turn the pump on and off whenever the master valve is activated or deactivated and have enabled master valve control however I don't see the option to change zone 1 to the master valve. Do I need to reset my Pro 16 and start again to see this option for zone 1 as the master valve?

  I don't think so. With the Pro devices the master valve is separated from Zone 1. Only on HD models you can set Zone 1 to work as Master valve (reducing the number of total valves available). For Pro this is not needed since Master Valve and Zone 1 are completely separated.
