Well this was of no help at all.  I see everybody is having an issue with this.

In my case, I had not problem using the ios app while at home on my network or while away using your cloud.  I never had used the Direct Access until you added the paid service.  I figured I would be able still use the app IF I use my VPN or if I use my DNS.  Neither work as indicated by many other users.  I'm OK with using the web ui for now but it's SLOW and not as nice as the app as you probably know.

This company is a total joke. They remove the most important feature and then tell you to just read this and that as if everyone has the time to figure out what they are suppose to fix. if all consumer products worked like this, consumers would never buy such a product. I have a feeling this is a Chinese company folding. Do not give them your info. or pay the annual fee. Orbit has a wifi controller of $115 on Amazon and I seriously doubt Orbit will go away anytime soon. This was your unethical bait and switch, should have stuck with my Toro.

I have no problems with direct access via VPN (and I am using Open VPN with a server configured on the router, and a client application on the iPhone or the computer). Which VPN are you using? Can you access other devices that are on your local network?

I have 2 asus routers.  One router has the VPN server side enabled while the router at the other location is connected to it using the VPN client side.  I have no trouble pinging devices through the vpn.  I can even connect to the rainmachine using the local IP address if I use a browser.   Just can't connect to it using the app anymore unless I am physically there.

I hope you are using the manually configured direct access, and not the local discovery (the latter does not usually work over VPN). I would try adding the RM again in direct access, specifing the IP address as https://XX.XX.XX.XX:8080. This worked for me. httpwas very important.

    Really very strange.
Ports 8080 and 8081 had to be opened.
Through the browser, it enters the controller only through port 8081, and through the application on iOS only through port 8080......
Something the developers have fooled.... (((

    Thanks Vova,

Your info helped.  I already had something else on 8080.  Changed that and now I can get in remotely.

What device had to have the ports 8080 and 8081 opened?  The router?, the vpn server? can you be more specific?

My android app will not connect no matter the port I manually added to the direct access settings.
