HD-12 backlight
I have seen it mentioned that if the backlight is always on, the life of the display will be shortened.
How does having the backlight on all the time, and/or dimmed shorten the life? I am assuming the backlight is LED and the display is a liquid crystal panel.
LED's have VERY long life as well as the LCD panel, unless a static image gets "burned" into the LCD.

I would go with the recommended procedure for the device from the manufacture. It is just a warning. You can always change from that advice, but unless you tear the unit apart and reverse engineer the display, I would stick with what the manufacture states. I do not think anyone here can answer your question as they do not know the actual components used in the design and the life expectancy of each in the way that they are being used. The company could also be protecting themselves against any problems when someone does leave the display on. This message is just a statement stating that it could happen.

The reason I asked is that I have a Davis weather station with a back lit LCD display and I have had the backlight on for about 4 YEARS and it hasn't failed. Still just as bright and the characters are all displaying.
I have never heard of this kind of issue with a backlit LCD display. Just look at an LCD TV... backlit with LEDs (the newer ones.. NOT the CFL backlight).
I was just wondering why that statement was made and whether the LCD would "burn in" if left on for extended periods of time.
