Hardware Rain sensor permanently "rain detected"

Last rain event was Feb 11.

This is set to "normally closed."

Troubleshooting included closing the circuit at the rainmachine and rebooting the machine. "Rain detected" remained constant through both.

Changing to "normally open" removes the rain restriction, but this is not "normal" especially with the sensor leads joined (closed) at the rain machine.

Monthly restriction active. Freeze restriction has been appearing periodically.

This is on an HD12 with:

    If you tested with just 2 wires shorted and "normally closed" setting then something is wrong in the connection.

    Is this wired correctly as shown here: https://support.rainmachine.com/hc/en-us/articles/227832747-Rain-Sensor for the ON/OFF sensor ?

    Hi, yes, it is wired correctly:

     

    The two red leads were shorted with no change in status. With "normally closed", "rain detected" never went off.

    This has worked for the last 8 months with the sensor. The only recent change was the new software release.

    The "reset" button is tempting. I've rebooted and powercycled with no change. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Yes it looks correct thank you, I'll ask one of the engineers to double check though. I'm not sure what the culprit is we will have to investigate. In the mean time could you please try to setup the RainSensor from Web UI > Settings > Restrictions ?

    Hi Steve,

    Are you saying that selecting the original (normally closed) setting and shorting the two rightmost pins directly (with tweezers or the tip of a screwdriver) has absolutely no effect on the rain message being displayed? How does your RanMachine react if you repeat this test with the "normally open" setting?

    Hi Istvan,

    Shorting the two rightmost pins with Normally Closed selected had no effect.

    I didn't try this with a pair of tweezers/screwdriver, but with the connector illustrated. I checked to make sure it was properly seated and the pins were not bent and then shorted the two red leads. This had no effect. I tried "normally open" and the state of the rain sensor stayed off (no rain detected) with the wires either open or shorted.

    It was working properly up until around 11Feb (the date of the last "rain event"). Cycling rain detected on and off consistent with local rain.This was installed in about June last year and has been working correctly since then until 11Feb when it stayed on.

    I reinstated the rain sensor via the web app just now with the leads shorted (closed) with the same result. The March 7 last rain event started appearing after I altered settings back and forth. It may be significant that prior to checking it on Mar10 it registered February 11. There may have been rain on march 7,

    Here is the weather history for the period around 7mar. It did rain some that day.

    The logs I posted on 10Mar are a bit wonky with a gap between 7mar and 10mar.

    It might be interesting to clear all watering restrictions (I haven't turned off the monthly restriction). Let me know what you think.

    Another thing I noticed, after rebooting on 10mar, the uptime indicated it had been up for 3 days (since 7mar?) even though it had only been up a few minutes.

    After powercycling yesterday the up time appeared accurate.

    I removed the monthly restriction (this disappeared from the display) but the rain sensor still behaves the same way (constantly rain-detected when closed and normally closed). I tried toggling the setting with no difference. Added the monthly restriction back.

    Hi Steve,

    We might have identified the cause. When you did go Web UI did you go to my.rainmachine.com and applied the setting ? Or you loaded the Web UI directly from device (http://deviceip ?). Could you try either by going directly to device IP Web UI or by replacing the url from my.rainmachine.com/web-ui/ with /ui/ and set the rain sensor again ?

    I am remote for the next 6 hours and won't be able to access except through my.rainmachine.com.

    Via the Internet, all attempts at updates have been to my.rainmachine.com/ui (and not web-ui). Not sure if this is what you meant.

    I'll try again later from the local network when I'm home.

    Hi Nicholas,

    From the local network I accessed the rainmachine via its IP and a browser (didn't know you could do that). It connects at its IP and port 8081/ui/. This did not make any difference in setting the rain sensor. It still is reporting "rain detected" when the sensor leads are shorted and it is set to "normally closed".

    I also tried setting it up via the android app. Same results (still stuck in rain-detected).

    I did take some voltage readings to check normal functioning:

    • Mains are 123V
    • across the power supply terminals, voltage is 31V (no load)
    • across the rain sensor pins voltage is 10V (nothing connected).
    • Across a zone valve terminal (common and zone) with manual watering started, voltage is 29V with load (zone valve). With watering stopped it's 0V.

    We will need to investigate more. It might be a hardware issue but there is also an issue with new Web UI that added flow meter settings and might affect this.

    I will let you know. On our side we can't replicate on 4.0.974 with RainSensor "default closed" connected to last 2 pins of the extension connector using Web UI loaded directly from device.

    To debug further what happens if you set rain sensor to "normally open" leave the wires open and then short them. Do you get a Rain Detected event ?

    Hi Nicholas,

    With the rain sensor set to "normally open" the "rain detected" restriction turns off. It remains this way whether the two right pins are shorted (closed) or not (open).

    I did notice flow meter settings being prompted when updating the rain sensor. These didn't seem to be appearing at the right time.

    10V is not ok there - it should be 4.5-5V.

    Can You tell us the model of the rainsensor You are using?

    The rainsensor (not connected at the time of the voltage reading) is a Hunter RainClik.
