Pathetic they're recommending port forwarding with those critical vulnerabilities. Great.

While I don’t agree on how this subscription model was handled, I’m taking the chance that RM will do the right thing and be able to survive, so I just paid for the one year subscription. I need the remote access to carry me through this irrigation season. Should RM ultimately fail, I’ll be out a portion of my 30 bucks. Have another irrigation controller in the wings that I can install before we start up the system again in 2023.

I'm looking to get an irrigation system and it looks like this company is about to fall under - no products to buy.

As a potential buyer - I can't trust someone who will just take away what I have paid for... I don't know why that needs to be said by anyone but here we are

I use home assistant so I can probably work around the cloud services and my smart home already has assistant integration, but that's irrelevant, if they go under, what functionality would I lose? (assuming I could even buy it IN THE UK)

RM is clearly about to fold. Your best bet is Rachio. That is what myself and many friends I know are doing. (Probably most everyone!!).

@Captain Comedy - if RM goes under then the hardware will still work, you can control it from the unit.  The app may work if you are using it local (wifi), but will definitely not work thru the cloud.  It may work remote if you enable port forwarding on your router (not trivial), but this is less secure and exposes your network to the outside.

As I am appalled at this companies decision to make us pay for a service originally advertised as free hence our decision to purchase such the unit. Why hasn't anyone mentioned the Wyze Smart Controller? It has 8 zones one can use two unites for more zones ans cost $65 ish. Ami I missing something? I doubt Wyze will go out for business in the near future like Rainmachine.

It really depends on what you are looking for. RM is probably the only one (?) that offers local access and does not force the user to use the cloud. This is why I bought it. The app will work without any problems if you know how to set up a VPN connection to your local network. So, there may be a great opportunity to buy a cheap second-hand one and set it up with your home automation (it works well with Apple Home or Home Assistant). Of course, there is a question of app updates, firmware updates, etc. But if you are looking for an easy solution, RM is probably not for you, as you won't be able to access it remotely without the cloud. Port forwarding on the router is an easy workaround but also quite unsafe.
